Meissen Cup and Saucer, Flower Bouquet and Gotzkowsky Relief, Marcolini Period Porcelain, polychrome painted and gilt, glazed. Cup with matching saucer by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Meissen. The cup of lobed, shaped and ribbed form with a curved handle, the saucer of shaped outline. On the rim of the saucer the relief pattern Gotzkowsky raised flowers with unpainted flowering sprays. In the well a polychrome flower bouquet with a rose and forget-me-nots, on the rim four further small bouquets; the outside of the cup painted with a bouquet and scattered flowers. Rim and handle gilt. On the undersides the underglaze blue crossed swords with a star. Condition commensurate with age, gilding rubbed. Cup h. 5 cm. Count Camillo Marcolini directed the Meissen manufactory from 1774 to 1814. The six-pointed star beside the mark is characteristic of these years; it goes back to a directive of 1775 and still makes pieces of the period unmistakable. The relief pattern is named after the Prussian merchant and art agent Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky (1710 to 1775), one of the first private customers to order a Meissen dinner service; the shallow floral relief was designed around 1741/44 and was later taken up in Berlin, Frankenthal, Vincennes, Chelsea and Copenhagen.
