The cup of plain beaker form on a stepped foot with a curved handle, the saucer shallowly recessed. In the well of the saucer a polychrome flower bouquet of a yellow and purple tulip, lilac and forget-me-nots, surrounded by scattered flowers; the cup with a bouquet of a rose and a blue flower and further scattered flowers. The lip of the cup and the edge of the saucer with a brown line. On the bases the underglaze blue crossed swords. Condition commensurate with age, small firing flaws, Scratches in the decor. Cup h. 7.5 cm. Polychrome flower painting replaced the East Asian inspired patterns at Meissen around 1740. The painters at first worked from engravings; from these developed the so-called German flowers, the leading motif of Saxon porcelain painting of the 18th c. This range of colour was made possible by Johann Gregorius Hoeroldt, who joined the manufactory in 1720 and by 1731 had developed a palette of 16 enamel colours, whereas only five had been available at the beginning of the century. A collector's piece for lovers of 18th c. Meissen porcelain.
