The firm had been founded in 1881 by Ernst Paul Lehmann and Jean Eichner in Brandenburg an der Havel as a factory for tin toys and was rebuilt from 1950 by Johannes Richter in Nuremberg. In 1968 Lehmann introduced the LGB with 45 mm gauge, at a time when model railways were otherwise becoming ever smaller; with the scale 1:22.5 the large-scale railway became the classic garden railway for outdoor operation. In the United States, too, the LGB revived the garden railway and shaped the G scale; in 2007 Märklin took over the brand. The almanac goes back to the American collector's guide “Greenberg's Guide to LGB Trains” by John R. Ottley from 1989, “Die Welt der LGB” is the title of the LGB general catalogues. Such model railway literature serves collectors as a reference work on model variants, track plans and layout construction.
