"Köhler's Medizinal-Pflanzen", volumes 1 and 2, edited by G. Pabst, medicinal plant atlas Paper, book in two volumes, "Köhler's Medizinal-Pflanzen in naturgetreuen Abbildungen mit kurz erläuterndem Texte", atlas to the Pharmacopoea germanica and other pharmacopoeias, edited by G. Pabst, Gera-Untermhaus, published by Fr. Eugen Köhler, title page volume I "Mit 102 Tafeln in Farbendruck", undated. Green boards with gilt cover title "KÖHLER'S MEDIZINAL-PFLANZEN", light brown spines with gilt spine title, corners with embossed decoration. Colour plates with plant and numbered detail figures, inscribed with Latin name and plant family, for example "Vanilla planifolia Andr." ("Orchideae") and "Astragalus adscendens Boiss" ("Leguminosae (Papilionaceae)"), with text pages describing the plates. Condition commensurate with age, pages slightly stained and browned, some page edges reinforced, binding rubbed. The plate work goes back to the physician and chemist Hermann Adolph Köhler (1834–1879); after his death Gustav Pabst worked up the material, and Franz Eugen Köhler published it in Gera-Untermhaus, which is why the publisher is often mistakenly named as author. The two main volumes appeared between 1887 and 1890, a supplementary volume followed in 1898, and an announced fourth volume never appeared. The colour plates were produced as chromolithographs after drawings by Walther Müller and the Berlin draughtsman C. F. Schmidt (1811–1890). As an atlas to the pharmacopoeias of several European countries and the United States, the work combines botanical illustration with pharmaceutical knowledge of medicinal plants, from vanilla to tragacanth.
