Handwritten ownership inscriptions on pastedown and endpaper, one dated 1865, as well as later pencil annotations. Not collated. Condition commensurate with age, binding worn, stained and cockled, joints cracked, pages creased and browned, several leaves with large losses and loss of text, loose fragments laid in. Please inspect. 37.5x23.5 cm (HxW) Daniel Schneider, superintendent of the County of Erbach, published his "Allgemeines Biblisches Lexicon" in three parts in Frankfurt am Main between 1728 and 1731. The work is regarded as the first German attempt at a Bible dictionary, that is, an alphabetically arranged reference work on the persons, places, antiquities and geography of the Bible. Schneider based it on the biblical work of Augustin Calmet, published in Paris in 1707, and drew on material by scholars such as Buxtorf and Bochart. The later "Biblisches Real-Lexicon" by Wilhelm Friedrich Hezel, published in Leipzig from 1783 to 1785, was also based on Calmet. Johann Heinrich Alsted's "Triumphus Bibliorum Sacrorum" of 1625 and the "Dictionarium Biblicum" printed in Lyon in 1693 are regarded as early forerunners of the genre.
