Porcelain Lid Plaque with Full Arms of the Schwarzburgbund Fraternity Sedinia Greifswald, 1902 Porcelain, polychrome painted, gold-decorated, glazed, round plaque for a lidded Schoppen stein, finely hand-painted with the multicoloured full coat of arms of the Schwarzburgbund fraternity Sedinia zu Greifswald, helmet with crown and crest of three ostrich feathers in red, gold and green, mantling in red-gold and green-gold, below the motto “Ich Wag’s, Gott Walt’s!”, at the upper edge the guiding motto “Sedinia sei’s Panier!”, on the reverse a handwritten dedication to a Leibfuchs in friendly remembrance, Greifswald, summer semester 1902, below the painter's signature “Otto Marcks”, good state of preservation commensurate with age, with light patina at the rim, D. 7 cm Sedinia was founded in 1884 at the University of Greifswald as a Christian, non-fencing fraternity, named after the Pomeranian provincial capital Stettin, and bears the colours red-gold-green; until its forced dissolution in 1936 it belonged to the Schwarzburgbund without interruption. In 1885 it joined with three other fraternities to form a Viererbund (league of four), which in March 1887 in Schwarzburg in Thuringia adopted the name Schwarzburgbund. Besides Sedinia, Uttenruthia Erlangen, Tuiskonia Halle and Nordalbingia Leipzig were among the founding fraternities. The league is non-fencing and Christian-oriented; its former motto was “Gott, Freiheit, Vaterland”. The dedication belongs to the custom of the Leibverhältnis, in which an older Bursch as Leibbursch advises a new Fuchs, who becomes his Leibfuchs. In the dedication “s. l. Lbfx.” stands for “seinem lieben Leibfuchs” (to his dear Leibfuchs) and “z. fr. Erg.” for “zur freundlichen Erinnerung” (in friendly remembrance); the exclamation mark with flourish after the names is the circle (Zirkel) of the fraternity.
