Gold coin Hong Kong 1000 Dollars 1998, Hong Kong International Airport, 22 carat, proof 22 carat gold, gold coin 1000 Dollars, Hong Kong, 1998, commemorative coin for the opening of Hong Kong International Airport, proof, struck by the Royal Mint for the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, obverse Bauhinia flower with lettering "HONG KONG" and Chinese characters, reverse geometric motif of arcs and triangular surfaces, Chinese denomination, numeral "$1000" and date "1998", in coin capsule in velvet-covered case with Royal Mint certificate of guarantee, in original box "Hong Kong International Airport" "Commemorative Gold Coin", condition proof, D. 22 mm, W. 16 g Hong Kong's monetary authority issued the gold coin for the opening of the new Hong Kong International Airport in July 1998; the mintage was limited to 15,000 pieces in proof quality. The motif of the reverse suggests aircraft and runway and symbolises Hong Kong's rise on the threshold of the 21st century. The obverse bears the Bauhinia, the flower of the Hong Kong orchid tree, which since 1993 has replaced the portrait of the British monarch on Hong Kong's coins. The format corresponds to the other Hong Kong gold coins of 1000 Dollars issued since 1975.
