Coloured and black-and-white cards, artist cards, multi-view cards and cards with a handwritten message on the picture side. Postally used, condition commensurate with age. The picture postcard emerged after the introduction of the correspondence postcard in the North German Confederation in 1870; from 1890 the cards bore printed pictures, initially coloured lithographs, then photographs in black and white and subsequently coloured. The "Gruss aus" cards with several town views and decorative elements were produced between the 1890s and 1905; since 1 February 1905 the address side has been divided, before that the message was written next to the picture. The period up to the First World War is regarded as the heyday of the picture postcard, and for local history such collections form a pictorial inventory of the old buildings. Around 1900 Quedlinburg was a centre of seed breeding: the firm Heinrich Mette, founded in 1784 as a seed shop and horticultural nursery, and the Gebrüder Dippe, since 1850, carried about 3,700 and 3,600 flower species and varieties respectively, and around 1905 Dippe farmed about 3,100 hectares of its own land.
