The reservist badge, instituted in 1965, was awarded in three grades according to the length of service. The military best-performer badge was awarded from 1964 for good performance in political, military and sports training; the shield form with assault rifle, bayonet and the inscription "BESTER" is the last version, from 1986 to 1990. The Civil Defense Medal for Loyal Service was instituted by the Council of Ministers of the GDR in 1977; the bronze grade was awarded after ten years of service. The Combat Groups of the Working Class were officially established in 1954, and their dissolution was decided in December 1989; their members came from state-owned enterprises and administrations and trained in their free time.
