L. 32 and 33 cm From 1959 the sidearms for the AKM assault rifle were designed as multi-purpose tools: together with the scabbard the blade forms a wire cutter with which live electrical wires can also be cut, which is why grip and scabbard carry insulating parts. Type 1 has a blade with saw back and a steel scabbard with slipped-on rubber sleeve, type 2 a moulded plastic scabbard with metal chape. The bayonet was also produced under licence outside the Soviet Union; the Polish version is made without serrations. In the GDR type 1 was manufactured from 1965 to 1978 as Seitengewehr Modell 59 for the MPi-KM submachine gun of the National People's Army (NVA), with black plastic grip, steel scabbard with black rubber sleeve and grey leather hanger.
