Two Seitengewehr 84/98 bayonets with scabbards, frog, E. u. F. Hörster 1942 and Mundlos 1944 Steel, plastic, leather. Two Seitengewehr 84/98 bayonets of the Wehrmacht with black plastic grip scales with diagonal grooves, screwed, crossguard without muzzle ring, flash guard, the blades single-edged with fuller. 1) Bright blade, marked “42 asw” at the ricasso (E. u. F. Hörster, Solingen, 1942), on the reverse the number “582 q”, with the matching numbered steel scabbard in a dark leather frog with retaining strap. 2) Blade darkly tarnished, marked “ab 44” at the ricasso (Mundlos AG, Magdeburg, 1944), on the reverse the number “5716 f”, with a steel scabbard without number and without bluing, not matching. Used condition commensurate with age, the blades stained and with cleaning marks, the grip scales with scratches, the scabbards rubbed and with loss of bluing, the frog dry. Viewing recommended. L. 40 and 42.5 cm The Seitengewehr 84/98 III was the standard sidearm of the Wehrmacht for the Karabiner 98k and was produced in large numbers from 1934; grip scales of wood and of plastic were used side by side throughout the entire production period. From 1940/41 letter codes replaced the makers' names written out in full, together with the two-digit year. The code asw stands for E. u. F. Hörster in Solingen, one of the major manufacturers of the model, recorded for the years 1934 to 1944; the code ab for the sewing machine factory Mundlos AG in Magdeburg, which made bayonets from 1941 to 1944. The serial numbers were allocated in blocks of ten thousand, which is why the number is followed by a lower-case letter for the block. The scabbard was given the number of the corresponding blade.
