Kriegsmarine, tropical tunic Afrikakorps, anchor buttons, depot stamp, Second World War Cotton, metal. Afrikakorps, tropical tunic of the Kriegsmarine, also called tropical field tunic, of sand-coloured cotton twill. Open turn-down collar with lapels, single-breasted with sand-coloured anchor buttons, two patch breast pockets with box pleat and buttoned flap, two patch skirt pockets with flap, waist seam, back vent, long sleeves with wide cuffs, without breast eagle and without shoulder straps. Inside partial lining of light fabric in the shoulder area, two tabs with metal eyelets, two inside pockets, depot stamp “324” inside, the lining stamped “Wäscheschneider / Leipzig” with size markings. The button at the lapel buttonhole is missing. Sleeve length 65 cm, L. 70 cm. The Kriegsmarine had its own tropical and summer uniform for hot climates; its tropical field tunic of sand-coloured twill with anchor buttons differs from the olive-green tropical tunic of the Heer, which was issued to the troops in North Africa from 1941 and faded to a light khaki in use. The naval tropical uniform was worn by naval officers in North Africa, for instance with the German Naval Command North Africa, the coastal artillery and the naval commands. From May 1942 the North Africa command post of the German Naval Command Italy directed the operations of the U-boats, E-boats and motor minesweepers as well as the coastal supply for Rommel's army with landing craft and transports; the North African campaign ended with the capitulation in Tunisia in May 1943. Tropical uniforms of the Kriegsmarine have survived considerably more rarely than those of the Heer.
