Dress bayonet 98, short version, walking-out or parade bayonet, Carl Grah Solingen, after 1929 Steel, metal, plastic and leather. Extraseitengewehr 98 (dress bayonet 98) in the short version, private purchase, also known as walking-out bayonet, modelled on the short bayonet 98 (KS 98). Single-edged blade with narrow fuller, straight back and point sharpened on both sides towards the tip. At the base of the blade the maker's mark in an oval with the legend “CARL GRAH SOLINGEN-OHLIGS” around a stylised aeroplane as company logo. Crossguard and pommel of light-coloured metal, the crossguard with hooked quillon, the pommel in bird's-head form with mounting slot and press stud; the grip scales of black plastic with regular diamond pattern, fixed with two rivets. With the black-lacquered sheet-metal scabbard and the leather frog. Condition commensurate with age, press stud functional, the hilt tarnished, the scabbard with losses to the lacquer. L. 35 cm, blade length 20.5 cm Carl Grah in Solingen-Ohligs was one of the Solingen edged-weapon factories that produced bayonets, private purchase dress bayonets and walking-out sidearms; the company logo is a stylised aeroplane. Private purchase dress bayonets were bought by soldiers themselves and worn with the walking-out uniform; they are more carefully finished than issue pieces and therefore often bear the full company mark. The short form with bird's-head pommel and hooked crossguard follows the issue model KS 98, which was issued to the machine-gun detachments from 1901. On 1 August 1929 Ohligs was united with Solingen, Wald, Gräfrath and Höhscheid to form the city of Solingen.
