L. 27.5 cm The Märklin company in Göppingen goes back to the tinsmith's workshop of Theodor Friedrich Wilhelm Märklin founded in 1859; from 1888 the sons Eugen and Karl ran the business as Gebr. Märklin, and from the entry of the partner Emil Friz in 1892 as Gebr. Märklin & Co., which is the origin of the “& Cie.” in the company mark. Besides dolls' kitchens, ship models, carousels and, from 1893, the tin railways made of tinplate, Märklin also produced military toys of sheet metal until the Second World War, among them hand-painted field cannons of sheet metal with a metal barrel on a wheeled carriage. Until 1929 Märklin used as its company mark the intertwined letters G, M and C in a coat-of-arms shield, together with the state name Württemberg; around 1929 a new mark followed.
