The bayonet 98/05 was introduced in the Prussian army at the end of 1905; because of the blade widening toward the point, it is also called "Butcher" in the English-speaking world. From 1915 the new pattern received a steel flash guard that protected the wooden grip scales from heat when firing the short Karabiner 98 A, and in this form the bayonet was produced in large numbers until 1918. Its manufacturers included Simson & Co, founded in Suhl in 1856 by Löb and Moses Simson, which also supplied Gewehr 98 rifles during the First World War and from 1952, as VEB Fahrzeug- und Gerätewerk Simson Suhl, built mopeds and motorcycles. Auxiliary bayonets with all-metal grips were made during the First World War. Dress bayonets were purchased privately by junior non-commissioned officers and enlisted men for their walking-out uniform. The Type I bayonet, Soviet 6Kh2, belongs to the AK-47 assault rifle and was manufactured at Izhmash from circa 1955 to 1960; licensed production took place in the GDR, Poland, Bulgaria and China, among others.
