The Prussian infantry officer's sword model 1889, IOD 89 for short, was the edged weapon of infantry officers in the German Empire; characteristic is the hilt with a folding guard plate, which on Prussian examples bears the crowned eagle. Sabres with a lion's head pommel were carried circa 1900 by Prussian officers of, among others, the artillery and, as an undress sabre, the cavalry. The Solingen arms factory F.W. Höller was active from 1866 to 1974 and produced swords, sabres, bayonets and officers' daggers.
