Three bayonets: Austria-Hungary M 1895, 98/05 Mauser 1916, Schubert & Salzer Chemnitz Steel, wood. Three bayonets with two scabbards. 1) Bayonet Austria-Hungary M 1895 with all-steel hilt without grip scales, crossguard with muzzle ring, pommel with mounting slot and press button, on the blade a mark with crown over a letter, with the steel scabbard with carrying hook and ball finial. 2) Seitengewehr 98/05 with hooked quillon, grooved wooden grip scales and blade with wide fuller, the blade marked at the base in three lines “WAFFENFABRIK / MAUSER A G / OBERNDORF a.N.”, on the blade spine the Prussian acceptance stamp crown over “W” over “16” and a further crown stamp, blade, hilt and scabbard toned brass-coloured throughout, with the steel scabbard with identical marking beneath a star, the scabbard with a dent. 3) Seitengewehr 98/05 with hooked quillon and grooved wooden grip scales, the blade at the base with the three-line maker's marking of the Schubert & Salzer Maschinenfabrik, Chemnitz, on the reverse the pictorial trademark and maker's marking of Gottlieb Hammesfahr, Solingen-Foche, on the blade spine a crown stamp with letter, without scabbard, the blade pitted with corrosion overall. Viewing recommended. L. 46 to 52 cm The bayonet M 1895 was introduced into the Austro-Hungarian army together with the Mannlicher repeating rifle M 1895; it was made by the Österreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft in Steyr and in Budapest, and it is fixed with the cutting edge upwards. The Seitengewehr 98/05 was introduced in 1905 for the Gewehr 98; the downswept hooked quillon was omitted on new production from 1915 and frequently ground off on older pieces. Crowned stamps with letter and year on the blade spine are Prussian acceptance marks: the crown over W stands for Kaiser Wilhelm II, the two-digit number for the year of acceptance. The Schubert & Salzer Maschinenfabrik AG in Chemnitz, founded in 1883 as a manufacturer of stocking knitting machines, was among the firms outside Solingen that assembled Seitengewehr 98/05 bayonets during the First World War; the blades were supplied by Gottlieb Hammesfahr in Solingen-Foche, which is why these pieces are marked on both sides. The double marking attests to the division of labour between blade supplier and assembly firm.
