Three containers for gunpowder. 1) Powder horn of light horn with brass mounts at base and mouth, four lateral ring eyelets, on two of them cords with wooden toggle and dark green tassel, the brass nozzle with open internal thread, the screw cap missing. 2) Powder horn of light horn, the mouth worked as a spout from the natural horn, two eyelets with carrying cord, the base flat, closed with wood and with two drilled holes. 3) Pear-shaped powder flask of brass, later reproduction of the 20th century, the body with embossed rocaille and acanthus relief, framed by beaded bands, at the top the measuring top with spring lever, two carrying rings at the sides. Used condition commensurate with age, the horns with scratches and handling marks, the brass parts stained and tarnished, the powder flask dented. Viewing recommended. L. 16 to 20 cm Before the introduction of cartridge ammunition every shooter carried his powder in a container with a measuring cut-off; cattle horn was the preferred material for this because it is light, waterproof and spark-proof. Alongside the large powder horn a smaller flask for the fine-grained priming powder was often part of the equipment. From the second quarter of the 19th century pressed and embossed metal flasks joined the horns; the pear shape with relief decoration and spring-loaded measuring top is the most common version and was produced in series both in Sheffield and on the Continent.
