Saxe-Gotha, pallasch with ruler's inscription on blade, brass-coloured hilt, probably 18th century Pallasch (heavy straight-bladed sword) with brass-coloured hilt, consisting of knuckle bow, large leaf-shaped shell guard, rectangular side bar and straight crossguard with baluster finial. Grip with black wrap, this incomplete and loose. The almost straight back-edged blade darkly corroded overall, in cursive script on the back of the blade “Friderich” and on the adjoining flat side “Sachsen Gotha und ...burg”, probably “Sachsen Gotha und Altenburg”, on the reverse remains of a further inscription no longer legible due to corrosion. One hilt bar broken, small hole in the shell guard. Without scabbard. Condition commensurate with age. L. 74 cm, blade length 62.5 cm. Blades bearing the name and title of the sovereign (ruler's inscription) were probably carried by the troops of the respective duchy. In the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg four dukes named Friedrich reigned: Friedrich I (1675 to 1691), Friedrich II (1691 to 1732), Friedrich III (1732 to 1772) and Friedrich IV (1822 to 1825).
