A very important letter, written at a time when there were countless attempts to leave southern Russia and seek refuge abroad: “We are in Novorossiysk, having been evacuated in haste from the Crimea; conditions here are intolerable—this filthy little town cannot accommodate this unprecedented mass of refugees; in the meantime, we are staying with your brother Wladimir and his family, who are all incomparably kind and considerate toward me, as is your brother Michel; but they can do almost nothing to help me with the arrangements for my departure for Copenhagen, which is the only desirable option at this very painful and complicated time. They are all leaving for Batumi soon, and I fear I will be left all alone here amid a terrible throng and chaos; so if, before their departure, I do not receive the necessary visas and the assurance that I can board a ship—even if only as far as Constantinople, which is also overflowing with refugees, without shelter or protection— despite my desperate desire to join you as soon as possible, I will go to Batumi with our family, and from there I will continue my efforts to make my way to you! ” • A selection of photographs of members of the Riabouchinsky and Zybine families. A total of 14 photographs, in various sizes (some date from before the revolution, others were taken in exile). Various sizes (from 55 × 45 mm to 175 × 125 mm). The pre-revolutionary photographs are particularly interesting in this selection (Dimitri Pavlovich with his children, as well as a family photo in Kuchino, taken in 1891).
