GRIMM, Pierre (1898–1979) The Artist’s Studio, 1937 Oil on canvas Signed and dated “P. Grimm 37” 46.5 × 55.5 cm GRIMM Pierre (1898–1979) The Artist’s Studio, 1937 Oil on canvas Signed and dated “P. Grimm 37” in the lower right corner 46.5 × 55.5 cm The work belongs to the Paris period of Pierre Grimm—a painter, printmaker, set designer, and photographer who was a representative of the Russian émigré community and the Parisian art scene. Grimm lived in Paris from 1923 and regularly participated in Parisian salons from the late 1920s onward. In the 1930s, the artist focused primarily on figurative painting, including interiors and scenes from everyday life. The theme of the studio holds a special place in his Parisian period: in 1930, Grimm rented a small studio (51 Avenue du Maine), whose views became the subjects of his works. Annenkov describes his studio as follows: “The walls of his studio are transformed into backdrops; furniture and various objects are grouped into still lifes. Here and there on the walls hang reproductions of works by French masters.” The year 1937 marked a period of intense activity for the artist in Paris, immediately preceding his solo exhibition at the A. Poyet Gallery in 1938.
