Nicolas de LARGILLIERE (1656–1746), attributed to Portrait of a Woman in a Green Dress and a Pink Silk Ribbon Oil on canvas H_79 cm W_64 cm Re-stretched, restored This portrait depicts an elegant woman wearing a dark green velvet gown, richly embroidered with gold, and styled in the Fontange hairstyle. Characteristic of women’s hairstyles at the French court in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, this style was popularized by a royal favorite, the Duchess of Fontanges. With its curled-up locks and ribbon embellishments, this style allows us to date our painting to the late 17th century or early 18th century. The embroidery pattern on the dress and the composition of the painting draw parallels to the portrait of Voltaire’s mother, which went on sale on November 30, 2025, at Osenat in Versailles, as well as to the portrait of a woman held in the collection of the Jacquemart-André Museum. The embroidered motif on the dress and the composition of our painting bring it closer to the portrait of Voltaire’s mother, which was sold on November 30, 2025, at Osenat in Versailles, as well as to a portrait of a woman held in the collections of the Jacquemart-André Museum.
