Andries DANIELZ (c. 1580–1640), attributed to Madonna and Child in a Garland of Flowers Oil on oak panel, two joined panels H_60.5 cm x W_47.5 cm (Restorations, particularly to the faces of the Virgin and the Child) Mark of the panel maker Michel CLAESSENS (c. 1590–1637) on the reverse. Our painting is characteristic of the numerous collaborations between various Flemish Baroque painters. We attribute the floral composition of our painting to Andries Danielz; another artist added a Virgin and Child. Paintings of the Virgin surrounded by flowers are particularly typical of Flemish Baroque art. These paintings are almost always the work of multiple artists, and the most famous duo remains the collaboration between Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568–1625) and Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640). Danielz is an artist who remains relatively unknown. He carried on the style of Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564–1637/38), of whom he was a student, and likely contributed to the dissemination of his works by producing copies of them. The mark of the panel maker Michel Claessens attests to the work of an artist who used high-quality materials.
