Gioacchino ASSERETO (1600-1649), entourage of The incredulity of Saint Thomas Oil on canvas. H_116 cm W_144.5 cm Restoration. Our painting depicts the Incredulity of Saint Thomas. This subject has inspired many painters with its dramatic tension, characterized by St. Thomas' reluctance to touch the wounds of Christ, while observation takes hold around them. This theme was particularly exploited during the Baroque period, which saw in it a strong potential for chiaroscuro, both in the scene itself and in its depiction. Christ is at once marked by the wounds he received on the cross, dead from them, and yet very much alive when confronted by Saint Thomas. Our composition is close to the works of the Genoese Baroque of the first half of the 17th century, and more particularly to the work of Gioacchino Assereto.
