SPANISH SCHOOL, 17th CENTURY Carved from polychrome and gilded wood. It depicts the Immaculate Conception in the traditional style, adorned with a white tunic and a blue mantle studded with stars. She is shown in a sorrowful, prayerful pose, with her hands clasped and her gaze directed forward. Her loose hair is parted at the back, slightly reminiscent of—though less rigidly rendered than—the work of Gregorio Fernández. She is adorned with a silver halo studded with stars. The movement of the drapery is rendered with great artistry, particularly evident in some folds of the tunic and the mantle, especially at the back. It rests on a base composed of several winged angel heads. Traditionally associated with the work of Alonso Cano, both his circle and his workshop. 135 cm tall.
