RARE ABRUPTA TURTLE EGG Displayed in a glass case. Egg diameter: Glass case: height: 21 cm, sides: 10 cm. Aldabrachelys abrupta. Note This fossil egg comes from an extinct species of giant tortoise endemic to Madagascar. Scientists estimate that it became extinct around the 12th century. However, remains—whose dating is controversial—suggest that some individuals lived as late as the 14th century, coexisting with humans. The Aldabra giant tortoise was reintroduced to Madagascar in 2018; it is a direct descendant of these Aldabrachelys abrupta ancestors.
