SIX RARE SALMON FLIES BY Charles RITZ (1891–1976) Presented in a box (32.5 x 42.5 cm), featuring in the center a 1959 portrait of Charles RITZ with his 65-pound salmon. Large-sized flies: sizes 4/0 to 8/0, dating from the 1930s to the 1950s. In excellent condition. All named: Green Highlander, Durham Ranger, Winter Helmsdale, Black Doctor, Jock Scott variant, Horny Restigouche. History and Provenance In 1959, Charles RITZ used these flies to fish the famous Alta River in northern Norway at the invitation of Herbert Pulitzer, an American media magnate. It was with the Horny Restigouche that he caught the biggest salmon of the week, a fabulous 65-pound fish (photo). Three of our flies were given to him by Mr. Pulitzer; the other three by the Duke of Roxburgh, whose family has held the fishing rights to the Alta River—in July—since the 19th century. In the 1950s, Coco CHANEL went fishing on the Alta three times. Charles RITZ gave these flies to his friend Pierre Affre as a birthday gift on March 6, 1975. He has kept them to this day, along with the invitation card from Charles RITZ. A copy will be provided to the buyer.
