VEUILLOT (Louis) - *Les Odeurs de Paris*. Paris, Palmé, 1867. First edition or one of the early printings from the Second Empire. Includes an autograph letter from the author to Abbé Darras (July 9, 1866). Green shagreen half-leather binding, ribbed spine by FOCK, Frédéric Fock, born in Meldorf (Schleswig-Holstein) in 1812 and died in Paris in 1884. He practiced, notably, at 28 Rue Mazarine in Paris. His high-quality artistic bindings (often signed “FOCK” at the bottom of the covers or pages) are highly sought after by bibliophiles. Ex-libris by Jean LARTEGUY. Abbé Jean-Étienne Darras (1826–1878), Vicar General of Nancy and Nevers, was an ecclesiastical historian renowned for his vast body of work in popularizing religious topics. The most famous book by the greatest Catholic polemicist of the 19th century, filled with scandalous anecdotes. Veuillot apparently sought to show that Paris, “which is considered the capital of the world, is a foul cesspool…” The first two parts of the book are devoted to the press, while the third part covers Parisian entertainment—theaters, café-concerts, and so on. This work sparked fierce protests around the world and in the newspapers due to the violent content it contained. The volume sold out in a matter of hours and was already in high demand the very evening it went on sale. It was reprinted, but with changes and omissions. (Lacombe, No. 1144). A work with allegorical characters: “Pachionnard d’Auvergne” for Jules Vallès; “Zora” for Cora Pearl; Saint-Rémy for the Duke of Morny; Lilia for George Sand; Champfleury and the Realists—Fromentin, Gautier, and Hugo—appear here under various pseudonyms. (Vicaire, VII, 1026.) Formerly part of the Jean LARTEGUY collection, from the estate of Mrs. L.
