BARBIER. ROLLAND, Romain. [PAINTED BINDING]. Jean Christophe in Paris. Paris, Cahiers de la Quinzaine, (1909). In-12, (8)-108-XVII pp. Cream-colored Bradel cardboard binding from the period, featuring a bouquet in a basket painted in gouache on the front cover, with gold highlights, signed G. Barbier and dated 1918, spine with painted title and author’s name, front cover preserved (board very slightly tarnished and rubbed, paper oxidized, and 2 pp. restored). Very attractive painted binding by George Barbier in the Art Deco style. Probably created in the 1920s when Barbier was associated with the École des Arts Décoratifs and the UCAD group, which practiced and created book bindings. Georges Barbier (1882–1932), renowned painter, illustrator, and fashion designer. The title is a section (II – Dans la Maison-1) of Romain Rolland’s serialized novel, *Jean-Christophe in Paris*. It was published in installments prior to the definitive original edition, which appeared in 1948. Rare. Provenance: from the library of Pierre Séjourné. Pierre Séjourné (1930–1993), a Parisian bookseller and collector of bookbindings, a flutist, and a lover of literature and classical music, frequented both the Parisian artistic and literary circles and the world of the decorative arts and their schools through his uncle, the architect and academician Albert Laprade. Also an author and actor, he devoted himself to writing and performing his own plays, which were staged primarily in the Paris region.
