AURIOL, R. MARX [ART NOUVEAU]. The First Book of Seals, Marks, and Monograms Paris, Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts, 1901. Small square 8vo. Paperback, pink cover with printed flaps (inner spine partially loose). First edition. The first book on monograms by Georges Auriol (1863–1938), the French poet, songwriter, painter, and typographer. With a beautiful calligraphic dedication in black and red ink to Narcisse Lebeau on a flyleaf. Vital, Hocquet, known as Narcisse Lebeau (1865–1931), was a pillar of the Chat Noir and a friend of Alphonse Allais, George Auriol, Claude Debussy, and Eric Satie. Provenance: from the library of Pierre Séjourné. Pierre Séjourné (1930–1993), a Parisian bookseller and collector of bookbindings, a flutist, and a lover of literature and classical music, was as much a part of Paris’s artistic and literary circles as he was of the world of the decorative arts and their schools, thanks to his uncle, the architect and academician Albert Laprade. Also an author and actor, he devoted himself to writing and performing his own plays, which were staged primarily in the Paris region.
