RABELAIS, François. The Works of Master François Rabelais. Amsterdam, Henri Bordesius, 1711. 6 tomes in 5 volumes, small in-12. Titles in red and black. Contemporary speckled glazed fawn calfskin, ribbed spine decorated in the “fanfare” style with alternating dotted motifs and gilt scrolls, title and volume number labels in red and black morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, a gilt fillet on the edges and a gilt scroll on the corners, red edges (skillful and discreet restorations, including a head cap, a few foxing spots; in Volume 3, a slight loss of paper at the top margin with minor damage to the text on pages 201–208; discreet stains and scratches). A lovely, very well-bound copy of the first critical and annotated edition. Compiled by the philologists Jacques Le Duchat and Bernard de La Monnoye, whose commentary will stand the test of time. A fine copy. Features a smiling face of Silenus in a gilt medallion repeated on the spines. Only 3 entries in the CCFr (BnF and Nice). Illustrated with a frontispiece, a portrait of Rabelais, three fold-out plates depicting La Devinière (Rabelais’s home), a fold-out map of the Chinon region, and a vignette featuring the coat of arms of the dedicatee, Raby Wentworth, a Peer of England. The portrait and the frontispiece were engraved by W. de Broen. It contains the Key at the end of the last volume. Cohen, 839. Cohen, 839.
