[HOLBEIN. CORROZET, Gilles. VAUZELLES, Jean de]. The Simulacra & Historic Faces of Death, as Elegantly Portrayed as They Are Artfully Conceived. In Lyon, under the coat of arms of Coloigne, 1538. Small quarto, 38 [of 52] leaves, 37 woodcut illustrations. Modern imitation marbled havana morocco, spine with 3 raised bands and blank, covers stamped with a cold-embossed frame with fleurons in the spandrels (f. G3, G4, and the last 12 f. signed L-N4 are missing; some minor soiling, though the f. appear to have been washed; discreet old graffiti on the title letters, on f. A2 and B1, with small marginalia from the period). A lovely edition of this dance of death, illustrated with woodcut figures based on Hans Holbein, by Hans Lützelburger. The text, sometimes attributed to Gilles Corrozet, is by J. de Vauzelles (according to Brunet, III, 254, or Lippmann, *Der Todtentanz*, Berlin, 1879). This copy contains 37 of the 41 required figures, with wide margins. The illustrations also include a title vignette and finely wood-engraved initials. [Sign. A-F4, G2 (of 4), H-K4]. Modern bookplate depicting a scorpion and the initials WRHJ. USTC, 6236. Brunet III, 254. Baudrier, V 175 and XII 248.
