DELAFOSSE, Jean Charles. [A collection of various types of furniture designed by J.C. Delafosse]. (Paris, Daumont, ca. 1775). Folio (44.5 x 33 cm). 19th-century fawn half-calf with corner pieces, ribbed spine decorated with gilded floral panels, red morocco title label, gilded title and gilded fillet on the covers, gilded head [Pagnant] (scuffs and scratches on the binding, including a loss of leather at the upper corner, but the interior remains in good condition). Famous engraved series by the architect, decorator, and ornamentalist Jean-Charles Delafosse (1734–1789), considered one of the manifestos of the Louis XVI style. Title page and frontispiece in pre-letterpress proof, followed by 140 black copper engravings on various types of paper: armchairs, sofas, bergère chairs, beds, screens, ottomans, fireplaces, altars, stoves, bathtubs, pulpits, alcoves, carriage entrances, guéridons, lighthouses… depicting 18th-century interiors based on Delafosse’s drawings. Our copy features some of the prints produced at the time (watermarked laid paper) on fine laid paper remargined onto heavy laid paper; some printed in black on thick white laid paper cut to size; and others on thick laid paper dyed to size (resulting in some variations in format). In a 19th-century binding by Pagnant. DECORATIVE ARTS. FURNITURE. CABINETMAKING. Berlin Cat., 464.
