Auction ended

Domenico ACQUAROLI (Trieste 1817–1880) Portrait of a Man in a Hat, after Rembrandt. Original canvas. 62 x 53 cm Inscription on the reverse of the canvas: Ritr... / di / Rembrandt. Inscribed on the back of the stretcher: Domenico Acquaioli / Firenze / 1874. A reproduction of Rembrandt van Rijn’s *Self-Portrait with a Beret*, now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Domenico Acquaroli, a painter born in Trieste in 1817 and who died in 1880, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, where he developed a style influenced by the academic tradition of his time. His work focused primarily on portraiture. In his works, Acquaroli placed great importance on the precise depiction of the face, facial expressions, and details of clothing. His work is notably in the tradition of painters active along the border between the Austrian Empire and the emerging Italian nation-state, such as Giuseppe Tominz (1790–1866). Our painter also created series on religious and secular themes, notably several depictions of the Stations of the Cross intended for churches in Trieste and *The Dream*, now housed at the Revoltella Museum in the Adriatic capital.
