ROY (Pierre). One Hundred Nursery Rhymes. Paris, Henri Jonquières, 1926. In-4, unpaginated, paperback, illustrated replacement cover. The book is illustrated with 45 original woodcuts, engraved and stencil-colored by Pierre Roy. Beautiful typographic work. First edition printed in a run of 540 numbered copies. One of the 500 printed on Arches paper. Pierre Roy’s compositions draw inspiration from old picture books but are modernized by a graphic style imbued with the Art Deco spirit. As early as 1922, he had written a preface to *Cent Comptines*, which he had collected mainly in western France and “always from the mouths of children,” and which he intended to publish with Henri Jonquières. The book was finally published in 1926. In 1925, Pierre Roy participated in the first exhibition of Surrealist painters alongside Giorgio De Chirico, Max Ernst, and Pablo Picasso, and in 1926, he held his first solo exhibition, whose catalog featured a preface by Louis Aragon. In 1933, he was appointed Painter to the Navy for a five-year term. The cover is sun-faded on the spine, and the paper is split along the edge of the front cover, but it is a fine copy. Experts: Loup Axmann and Jean-Luc Boisseau
