COUTAUD (Lucien, ill.) & VOLTAIRE. *Le Taureau blanc*. Besançon, Société des bibliophiles comtois, 1956. In loose sheets, with a padded cover, publisher’s folder, and slipcase. Limited edition of only 150 copies; this is one of the contributor’s copies, featuring an additional illustrated leaf with an EAS from the illustrator to Jacques Guignard on the occasion of the inaugural dinner held to celebrate the book’s publication. The text is illustrated with original etchings by Lucien Coutaud (1904–1977). Scuffs on the slipcase and other minor flaws. An archivist, paleographer, and erudite humanist, Jacques Guignard (1912–1980) devoted his career to the National Library, where he directed the Printed Works Collection before heading the Arsenal Library from 1961 to 1980. Combining a deep knowledge of the history of the book with a rare artistic sensibility, he enriched and promoted the heritage collections while playing a pioneering role in the development of international bibliophilia. Experts: Loup Axmann and Jean-Luc Boisseau
