BRADSHAW (Percy V.). The Art of the Illustrator. London, The Press Art School, [1917–1918]. 20 folio-sized fascicles (approx. 420 x 270 mm) in gray cardboard covers printed in brown, each containing a text booklet and six plates mounted on cardboard. First edition. Percy Venner Bradshaw (1877–1965), a press illustrator and founder in 1905 of the Press Art School—a correspondence drawing school based in Forest Hill—conceived this series as a master class by example. He commissioned twenty prominent British illustrators to create an original composition, allowing each to choose their own subject, provided they showed every stage of the process, from the first sketch to the finished drawing. The twenty artists are H. M. Bateman (1887–1970), C. E. Brock (1870–1938), Cyrus Cuneo (1879–1916), W. Russell Flint (1880–1969), Dudley Hardy (1867–1922), William Hatherell (1855–1928), Fortunino Matania (1881–1963), Bernard Partridge (1861–1945), Spencer Pryse (1882–1956), Warwick Reynolds (1880–1926), Frank Reynolds (1876–1953), W. Heath Robinson (1872–1944), Harry Rountree (1878–1950), Balliol Salmon (1868–1953), C. A. Shepperson (1867–1921), E. J. Sullivan (1869–1933), Bert Thomas (1883–1966), Louise Wright (active around 1910), and Lawson Wood (1878–1957). The issues are in good overall condition; remnants of the box that contained them are included (destroyed). Experts: Loup Axmann and Jean-Luc Boisseau
