BUDÉ (Guillaume). Libri V de asse, & partib. ejus. Venice, published by Alde and Andrea Asulani Soceri, 1522. Large 8vo, [12] leaves, 162 leaves, [2] leaves, (numerous pagination errors). Later (18th-century) binding in ivory vellum, with gold fillet framing the covers and along the edges; smooth spine decorated with fillets, title in gold, and date at the bottom. The work is printed in a beautiful italic typeface and adorned with the dolphin-and-anchor mark on the title page and on the verso of the last leaf. First and only Aldine edition of Budé’s major work on ancient coins, dedicated by Francesco Torresano (father-in-law of Manucce Alde and publisher) to the great bibliophile Jean Grolier, a friend of Guillaume Budé. Considered one of the masterpieces of the humanist and antiquarian Guillaume Budé (1468–1540), the treatise *De Asse et partibus eius* [The As and Its Fractions] is devoted to Roman coins and measures. Yet this scholarly work extends far beyond its original subject and is of equal interest to numismatists and historians alike. The first edition was published in Paris in 1514. A rare edition and the only one of this treatise that retains value, according to Brunet. An old handwritten bookplate in brown ink on the title page. A few old annotations in the margins. White endpapers detached from the covers. A beautiful copy presented to Pierre Guignard by 13 of his colleagues at La Réserve, all of whom signed the note. Experts: Loup Axmann and Jean-Luc Boisseau
