DU ZEQING (1876–1933) YELLOW SOAPSTONE SEAL CARVED WITH A LANDSCAPE SCENE Dimensions: Height 5 cm Wide 3,5 cm Depth 3,5 cm Weight: 75,9 grams A small rectangular seal carved from warm yellow-orange stone, its sides ornamented with a continuous miniature landscape. A pavilion stands beneath an overhanging rock formation, while tiny seated figures appear among trees and curling ground lines. The upper surface rises into an irregular, gently sloping crest, and the translucent-looking material gives the shallow carving a soft, luminous depth. Chinese seals are at once practical instruments of identification and highly personal objects of artistic expression. Their carved bodies often became small sculptural landscapes, inviting close examination before the seal face was ever impressed on paper. Here the interplay of architecture, vegetation and figures evokes a secluded scholarly retreat within the narrow confines of a hand-held object. Its particular charm lies in the miniature scale of the scene, the confident organisation of the relief and the honey-coloured surface.
