SEATED GREEN TARA STONE NEPAL 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 25 cm Wide 18 cm Depth 8 cm A Nepalese stone relief of Green Tara seated in a graceful posture within a rounded mandorla. The bodhisattva is richly adorned with crown and jewellery, one leg pendant in the characteristic posture of readiness to rise, while the hands form elegant gestures beside the body. Lotus stems and ornamental details frame the figure and reinforce the balanced symmetry of the composition. Green Tara is one of the most beloved female deities of Himalayan Buddhism, revered as a swift and compassionate saviour. Her relaxed but alert posture distinguishes her from more strictly meditative figures: the extended leg conveys her readiness to come immediately to the aid of devotees, while the lotus imagery expresses purity and enlightened potential. Carved as a compact stele, the image was suited to a shrine or architectural devotional setting. The pale, weathered stone softens the detailed jewellery and floral ornament, giving the sculpture a calm presence that complements Tara's compassionate iconography.
