VERY LARGE BRONZE DURGA SHRINE INDIA 17TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 57 cm Wide 30 cm Depth 18 cm Weight: 14.2 Kilograms A monumental bronze devotional shrine dedicated to the goddess Durga rises within an elaborate architectural framework. A group of multiple figures is arranged within a tall openwork framework of columns, subsidiary niches and projecting ornamental elements. The principal deity occupies the centre of the lower register, accompanied by smaller figures and richly worked attributes. Above, a circular floral or wheel-like motif forms a striking focal point beneath the crowning elements of the shrine. The cast structure creates a dense interplay of open spaces, silhouettes and finely articulated relief. Warm golden highlights appear on the projecting details against a darker bronze surface. Such shrines provided a concentrated setting for richly detailed Hindu devotional iconography.
