A CHINESE MEI VASE CIZHOU KILN Dimensions: Height 32 cm Wide 20 cm Depth 20 cm Weight: 2200 grams A Chinese Cizhou-kiln meiping vase with a generously rounded body tapering towards the foot and a narrow opening beneath a fitted pale cover. Bold dark iron-brown floral sprays and curling foliage are painted across a creamy slip ground, framed by broad horizontal bands and a lower register of upright petal motifs. The dramatic contrast between pale body and dark ornament reflects the lively brushwork associated with northern Chinese Cizhou stoneware. Meiping vessels were admired for their graceful silhouette and broad decorative fields, ideally suited to sweeping painted designs. This example offers a striking combination of classical Chinese ceramic form, expressive floral painting and graphic monochrome colour.
