(R) A BRONZE BUDDHA HEAD, AYUTTHAYA, THAILAND, 17TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 27 cm Wide 16 cm Depth 18 cm without base Weight: 6488 grams with base A finely modelled bronze Buddha head with downcast eyes, softly arched brows and a composed, faintly smiling mouth. The hair is arranged in tight curls beneath a prominent cranial protuberance, while the long earlobes frame the serene face. The dark surface is enlivened by warmer highlights, particularly along the curls and the planes of the cheeks; the head is displayed on a separate dark support. The elongated ears and stylised hair are familiar elements of Buddhist imagery, expressing the Buddha's renunciation and awakened state. The isolated head retains a powerful presence, its restrained expression balancing the intricate pattern of the hair.
