A FRAGMENT OF A KNEEILING KHMER FIGURE Dimensions: Height 32 cm Wide 28 cm Depth 13 cm without base Weight: 12,9 Kilograms with base This sandstone relief fragment depicts a seated female figure, rendered in high relief against a rough, uncarved background. The figure is shown in a graceful pose with the right leg bent and raised, while the left leg rests beneath the body in a posture of ease. The figure’s right arm crosses the chest, the hand placed gently over the heart—a gesture often associated with devotion or reverence. The sculpted form conveys a sense of calm introspection and quiet dignity. The body is rounded and naturalistic, with particular attention given to the subtle swell of the belly and the flowing treatment of the sampot (lower garment), which is tied with a broad sash at the waist and falls in delicately modeled pleats. The hairstyle, with voluminous locks or a knotted chignon piled atop the head, and the full cheeks and softly smiling lips, are typical of Khmer aesthetic ideals from the Bakheng to early Baphuon periods. Though the facial features are partially worn, the serene expression remains legible. The poised posture, beautifully modelled limbs and fluid silhouette highlight the grace of Khmer figural carving. Fragmentary, with losses to the left arm, lower legs, and surrounding architectural context. Surface abrasions and weathering present. Mounted on a modern base for display. Seated female figures in similar poses frequently appear in Khmer lintels, tympana, and wall panels, often accompanying major deities or engaged in devotional acts. The expressive naturalism and composed demeanor of this sculpture reflect the Khmer ideal of divine femininity and celestial grace.
