EARLY INDIAN TERRACOTTA RELIEF FRIEZE WITH HORSE AND FIGURES, 14TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 18 cm Wide 31 cm Depth 4 cm Weight: 3083 grams A rectangular Indian terracotta relief frieze of the fourteenth century, worked in high relief with an animated scene of a horse and three human figures. At the left, a horse stands beneath sweeping ornamental forms, while the figures to the right are shown with elaborate coiffures, jewellery and closely incised garments. Their raised arms and lively poses create a strong sense of movement across the narrow horizontal panel. A radiating rosette-like motif occupies the lower right corner, balancing the larger animal form at the opposite end. The warm reddish clay retains deeper tones within the recesses, which accentuate the contours of the faces, textiles and decorative details. Cracks, worn edges and small losses remain visible across the surface, giving the fragment a richly textured character. Displayed on a transparent modern support, the relief combines figural storytelling with the rhythmic, decorative qualities of Indian architectural terracotta.
