LARGE STANDING BRONZE SHIVA NATARAYA INDIA 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 57 cm Wide 43 cm Depth 10 cm Weight: 10 Kilograms An imposing bronze figure of Shiva as Nataraja, the Lord of the Dance, shown within a broad circular aureole bordered by stylised flames. The multi-armed deity balances on one leg while the other is raised across the body, creating a dynamic diagonal movement. Radiating locks of hair, an elaborate headdress and finely articulated ornaments amplify the sense of energy. The figure stands above a decorated stepped pedestal, with a small figure beneath the dancing foot. The openwork ring frames the central sculpture without concealing its silhouette, while brown and green surface tones contrast with golden highlights on the raised details. Nataraja embodies the cosmic dance of creation and dissolution, a subject of enduring importance in South Indian bronze sculpture.
