(R) A JADE BI DISC WITH CHILONG, LIGHT GREEN JADE, CHINA, 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 9,5 cm Wide 7 cm Depth 0,5 cm without base Weight: 100 grams with base A pale green jade bi disc with a circular opening and concentric bands of finely incised archaistic scrollwork. A lively openwork chilong rises above the upper edge, its head turned outward and its sinuous body arching over the rim. The translucent-looking stone shows subtle tonal variations and a few warmer inclusions, while the openwork silhouette contrasts with the disc's smooth, restrained geometry. The object is presented on a modern transparent stand. The bi disc is one of the enduring forms of Chinese jade carving, first associated with ancient ritual practices and later repeatedly reinterpreted in decorative and scholarly settings. The addition of a chilong introduces a dynamic auspicious creature to the otherwise symmetrical design, joining archaistic vocabulary with the playful movement of carved openwork. The tension between the precisely centred aperture and the asymmetrical dragon makes the piece especially engaging. Its softly coloured stone and shallow incised ornament reward close viewing without overwhelming the clarity of the form.
