(R) A CHIZCHOU CERAMIC VASE WITHWAVE PATTERN, CHINA, SONG TO YUAN DYNASTY Dimensions: Height 25,8 cm Wide 13 cm Depth 13 cm Weight: 1158 grams A tall Cizhou-type stoneware vase with rounded shoulders, a tapering lower body and short flared mouth, decorated in iron-brown over a pale slip ground. Across the principal register runs a bold continuous wave pattern, painted with broad, energetic strokes and framed by horizontal bands. Areas of crackle, glaze thinning and exposed buff body at the foot emphasize the vessel's direct ceramic character. Cizhou wares were produced across a network of northern Chinese kilns and are celebrated for an unusually free approach to surface decoration. Potters treated the pale slipped body almost like paper, using dark iron pigment with the speed and confidence of brush-and-ink painting. Abstracted waves were particularly well suited to this vocabulary, allowing repetition without sacrificing movement. The horizontal sweep of the waves wraps continuously around the body while the vertical profile remains calm and controlled. The contrast gives the vessel a lively presence and captures the expressive quality that distinguishes Song-to-Yuan Cizhou ceramics.
