(R) A PAIR OF CHINESE VASES, CHINA, 20TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 41 cm Wide 24 cm Depth 24 cm each Weight: 7863 grams A matching pair of covered baluster vases, their rounded bodies rising to short necks beneath domed lids crowned with bright turquoise guardian-lion finials. Dense polychrome decoration unfolds in successive panels: figures converse in architectural interiors and garden settings, while floral reserves, ornamental borders and small landscape passages animate the shoulders and covers. The richly varied palette and close-packed scenes give the two vessels a lively, almost tapestry-like surface. The decorative vocabulary recalls the elaborate figure painting and auspicious ornament of later Chinese famille-rose porcelain. Here the guardian lions provide a playful sculptural counterpoint to the narrative painting, and the close correspondence between the two vases gives the pair a strong architectural presence when displayed together.
