(R) A MARTABAN STORAGE VASE, SOUTH CHINA, 15TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 86 cm Wide 45 cm Depth 45 cm Weight: 18,8 Kilograms An imposing storage jar of elongated baluster form, its rounded shoulders rising to a short neck and thick, outward-turned lip. Small pierced lugs encircle the upper body, while bands of relief ornament and branching vegetal motifs interrupt the otherwise broad expanse of warm amber-brown glaze. Darker glaze gathers in the recesses, giving the decoration depth and emphasising the substantial contours of the vessel. Jars of this general Martaban type were designed for storage and long-distance circulation, their sturdy bodies and shoulder lugs suited to practical handling and securing a cover. The combination of functional scale and carefully organised surface ornament is particularly compelling here: the vessel has the authority of a large transport container while retaining the visual richness of a decorated ceramic object. For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission. This VAT is waived for: - Private buyers outside the EU who officially export the items.- Businesses inside the EU holding a valid VAT number, exporting to their home country. Proper export documentation is required to waive the VAT
